The Wells-Lyons Family Cemetery (or Lyons Cemetery as it is also called) lies in a one-half acre plot of farmland in Wellington, Menifee County, Kentucky. The land was a part of 400 acres which was originally purchased by Edmund Wells in 1838 from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Two-hundred acres, including the one-half acre where the cemetery now stands, was then sold to Richard Wells in about 1846. Richard was the first known burial in the cemetery in June 1870, however it is believed that others, including Richard’s son Samuel who died in 1856, may have been buried there earlier.

The cemetery has 128 known gravesites and is still an active burial ground for descendants of Edmond Wells, Benjamin Wells (Richard’s father) or John Clark Lyons. Seven generations of descendants are currently interred in this cemetery. A full description of the cemetery, the ownership of the land, and information about those buried here is found in the book, OUR FAMILY’S HALLOWED GROUND, which can be purchased on Amazon.com or by contacting the author, Vicki Wells Cox.

This cemetery’s maintenance is paid for from the interest earned on a small cemetery trust fund created by Paul Wells and from donations of faithful family and friends like you.   Pat and Linda Wells and their son Ethan have been faithfully maintaining the cemetery property and managing the funds for its upkeep for many years.   In the past, they have given the family a recap of the financials and our projects at our reunions.  While we have not yet formalized the cemetery into a tax-exempt organization, that is something that was favorably discussed at our last reunion in 2017.  The project is ongoing.

News

Bob Lyons

Sad news about our cousin, Bob Lyons.  Bob passed away unexpectedly yesterday at his home in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  He never missed a chance to come to Kentucky for Mt Sterling High School or Wells-Lyons Family reunions or Mt. Sterling Court Day.  He was very supportive of our family cemetery and donated often to its maintenance …
